Gorakshep to Kathmandu helicopter flight

This is the long way out: Everest Base Camp to the capital in a single booking, a little over an hour in the air, with a planned fuel stop in the middle. It is the flight people take when the trek is finished, the days have run out, and there is an international departure in thirty-six hours.

The route drops the length of the Khumbu, refuels at Lukla or Phaplu, then crosses the middle hills into the Kathmandu valley. You go from 5,164 metres to 1,400 metres in the space of a morning, which is a descent profile no trekker on foot will ever match and which, for anyone struggling with altitude, works better than any medication.

Who books it

Three groups. Trekkers out of time, who would otherwise spend four days walking and one more flying. People who are unwell and need to be at low altitude quickly. And climbing teams coming off an expedition with equipment and a schedule.

The fuel stop

We want to be explicit about this, because it is the thing people feel misled about elsewhere. A single-engine helicopter cannot carry passengers from 5,164 metres to Kathmandu without refuelling. Every operator stops. The honest ones tell you before you pay.

Cost

This is one of the more expensive seats in our rate card, and the reason is simple arithmetic: the aircraft is committed to you for roughly two hours and has to fly back up the valley afterwards. If you only need to reach the trailhead, the Gorakshep to Lukla leg costs a little over half as much.

Departures use the domestic side of Tribhuvan International. Traffic is heavy between seven and nine in the morning, so a helicopter slot can be held on the ground for twenty minutes even in perfect weather. Arrive an hour before your departure time with your passport.

The same high-altitude departure constraints apply as on the Gorakshep to Lukla leg: reduced payload, ten kilos of baggage, and a real possibility that a group is split across two lifts.

The intermediate fuel stop is part of the operation. You will normally stay in the aircraft or step out onto the apron for a few minutes. Follow the crew’s instructions; a running or cooling aircraft on a busy apron is not a place to wander.

If you are flying because someone is unwell, tell us their symptoms and approximate weight when you book. An altitude case flown straight to 1,400 metres usually improves fast, but the descent profile and the destination may need to be a hospital rather than an airport.
