Lukla
Lukla is where the Everest Base Camp trek begins and ends for most people who walk it. Tenzing-Hillary Airport sits on a shelf at 2,845 metres with a mountain wall at the top of the runway and a 600-metre drop at the bottom. The strip is 527 metres long and slopes uphill at about twelve degrees, which is what allows a loaded aircraft to stop at all.
It is flown under visual rules only. There is no instrument approach, no radar, and no possibility of landing in cloud. When the valley fills, nothing moves, and the delays cascade: a morning lost at Lukla puts several hundred trekkers into a queue that takes days to clear in October.
Why helicopters change the picture
A helicopter does not remove the weather problem, but it changes the arithmetic. A fixed-wing aircraft needs a usable window at both ends and a committed approach. A helicopter can hold at Phaplu or Surke, watch the cloud, and slip through a gap that would be no use at all to a Twin Otter. It can also land on pads other than the airport when the airport itself is congested.
This is why trekkers with a flight home in four days switch to helicopters when the fixed-wing schedule collapses. It is more expensive. It is also, on those days, the difference between making your connection and not.
Flights from Lukla
Lukla is both a destination and one of our busiest departure points. Short shuttles run up the valley to Namche, Pangboche, Tengboche and Thame, and longer legs come down from Gorakshep, Lobuche, Pheriche and Dingboche when trekkers decide not to walk the return.
On the ground
There is a lodge and a teahouse within two minutes of the apron, which matters when a weather hold turns into three hours. If you are flying out, do not book a same-day international connection from Kathmandu. Leave a night in the valley.
