Pangboche
Pangboche is the highest permanently inhabited village in the Khumbu at 3,985 metres, sitting directly beneath Ama Dablam. It has the oldest monastery in the region and, more practically, a helipad that serves the stretch of trail where altitude problems most often begin to show.
Between Pangboche and Dingboche the trail crosses four thousand metres and stays there. A trekker who has been managing a headache since Namche often stops managing it here, and Pangboche is where the decision to fly out gets made.
Flying to Lukla
The run down to Lukla takes about fifteen minutes. It is a straightforward descent along the Imja Khola and then the Dudh Kosi, and it is one of the more reliable short legs in the valley because it loses altitude the whole way.
Ama Dablam base camp
The base camp for Ama Dablam sits roughly an hour above the village at 4,600 metres. During the autumn climbing season we run regular flights in and out for expeditions, equipment and, occasionally, an evacuation from high on the mountain.
