The Kathmandu to Lukla helicopter flight is the fast way onto the Everest Base Camp trail. Forty-five minutes after leaving Tribhuvan International you are standing at 2,845 metres at the trailhead, having skipped both the four-hour pre-dawn drive to Ramechhap and the fixed-wing queue that forms behind every bad morning.

The route climbs out of the Kathmandu valley, crosses a long series of ridges and river systems through the middle hills, and picks up the Dudh Kosi for the final run into the Khumbu. The terrain steps upward the whole way, from around 1,400 metres at the start to nearly 2,900 at the airstrip, and the scenery changes from terraced farmland to pine forest to the first proper mountain walls.

Why trekkers choose the helicopter

Mostly because of what happens when the fixed-wing schedule breaks. Lukla is flown under visual rules only, and in October a single bad morning puts several hundred people into a backlog that can take three days to clear. Trekkers with a booked trek start, a guide on a meter and a flight home do the arithmetic and switch.

The second reason is nerves. The fixed-wing aircraft into Lukla are small, they move around in the thermals, and the landing is genuinely dramatic. A helicopter approach into the pad beside the apron is a calmer experience for anyone who does not enjoy flying.

Shared seat or private charter

A shared seat puts you on one of three scheduled departures with up to four other travellers, at a fixed published price. A private charter gives you the whole aircraft, your own departure time, and the ability to divide the weight allowance as your group needs it. For one or two people, share. For three or more, run the numbers: the charter price often works out close.

The airstrip is 527 metres long, slopes uphill at around twelve degrees, and ends in a rock face. Helicopters use the pad adjacent to the apron rather than the runway itself. Stay behind the marked line until the rotor has stopped and approach only from the front, where the crew can see you.

Every flight on this route is operated by a CAAN-licensed operator with a pilot current on the Lukla approach. The fifteen kilo baggage limit is enforced at check-in and is not negotiable: it is a performance calculation, not a revenue one.
