Pheriche
Pheriche is a line of stone lodges on a flat, wind-scoured valley floor at 4,371 metres. There are no trees. There is very little shelter. What there is, and the reason the place matters far beyond its size, is the Himalayan Rescue Association aid post, staffed through both trekking seasons by volunteer doctors who see altitude illness every single day.
That combination, a clinic and a flat pad beside it, makes Pheriche the most important helicopter landing site in the Everest region. More of our evacuations start here than anywhere else.
Why so many people fly out of Pheriche
The trail from Pangboche to Pheriche crosses 4,300 metres and the body either copes or it does not. The aid post runs a free daily talk on altitude illness, and a proportion of the people who attend it are advised that afternoon to descend. When descending on foot is not safe or not fast enough, the answer is the pad outside.
Scheduled flights
We run a scheduled morning departure from Pheriche to Kathmandu and a short leg down to Lukla. Both leave early, because by ten in the morning the wind through this valley makes for an unpleasant and sometimes unflyable departure.
