Lukla to Kathmandu helicopter flight

Flying out of Lukla is a different transaction from flying in. Nobody books this leg in advance out of curiosity. They book it because the trek is finished, the knees have had enough, the days have run out, or the fixed-wing schedule has collapsed and there is an international flight waiting in Kathmandu.

The flight takes about forty-five minutes and follows the Dudh Kosi south before crossing the middle hills into the Kathmandu valley. It is the same terrain as the inbound leg, seen in reverse and usually in better light, with the mountains falling away behind you.

When the fixed-wing queue forms

Late October is the worst of it. Several days of cloud stack up the backlog, and when the weather finally breaks, the airline seats go to whoever booked first, not to whoever needs them most. Helicopter capacity is the release valve, and it is why our prices on this leg are published rather than quoted: in that situation, people deserve to know the number before they are standing in the queue.

Shared seats out of Lukla

Most outbound passengers travel on a shared seat. If you are alone, we will match you with other travellers on the same morning, which is usually possible within a day in season. If you need to leave on a specific flight and cannot wait for a group to form, take the private charter.

Give yourself a night

The single most common mistake on this route is booking an international flight out of Kathmandu on the same day as the Lukla departure. The Khumbu does not run to a schedule. Leave a night.

Departures use the domestic side of Tribhuvan International. Traffic is heavy between seven and nine in the morning, so a helicopter slot can be held on the ground for twenty minutes even in perfect weather. Arrive an hour before your departure time with your passport.

This is the reverse of the inbound route and carries the same operating constraints: visual flight rules, daylight only, fifteen kilos per passenger on a shared seat.

The departure from Lukla is made from the helipad beside the apron. In the busy season the apron is crowded with fixed-wing traffic, porters and freight, and the ground environment is the riskiest part of the day. Follow the crew, stay behind the line, and keep your group together.
