Gokyo
Gokyo sits at 4,790 metres on the shore of the third of six turquoise lakes strung along the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal. It is a quieter, harder and in many people’s view more beautiful alternative to the standard Everest Base Camp route.
Gokyo Ri, the hill above the village, gives a view of four eight-thousand-metre peaks, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu, in one panorama. Most people who come here come for that.
Getting out
Walking out of Gokyo means either retracing the valley to Namche or crossing the Cho La at 5,420 metres to join the base camp trail. The Cho La is a genuine mountain pass with ice on it, and it stops a fair number of trekkers who arrive at it tired.
The helicopter alternatives are a twenty-minute leg to Lukla or a direct hour to Kathmandu. We also fly the short hop between Gorakshep and Gokyo for people who want both valleys without the pass.
A narrow valley
The Gokyo valley is tighter than the Khumbu and less forgiving of cloud. Departures here are early, and a marginal forecast is more likely to ground a Gokyo flight than a Lukla one. Build a spare day in.
