Bhote Koshi valley, Everest region
Thame
Thame lies at 3,800 metres in the Bhote Koshi valley, west of Namche and off the main trekking route. It is the home village of Tenzing Norgay and of several generations of Everest summiteers since, and it has a monastery cut into the cliff above the settlement.
Because it sits in a different valley from the main Khumbu trail, Thame is occasionally flyable on mornings when Lukla and Namche are closed in. That is a minor operational advantage but a real one.
Flights
The main movement here is the short leg to Lukla, twelve minutes, which trekkers use at the end of the Thame and Renjo La routes. We also fly charters in for the Mani Rimdu festival and for expeditions heading towards the Nangpa La.
After the 2024 flood
The village was badly damaged by a glacial lake outburst in August 2024. Rebuilding is ongoing and the trail and lodge situation changes season to season. Ask us for the current picture before planning a trip that depends on staying here.
