Khare sits at 4,950 metres at the head of the Hinku valley and is the last settlement before Mera Peak, the highest trekking peak in Nepal. Almost everyone here is a climber or climbing support.
The flight to Lukla takes twenty-five minutes and removes the Zatrwa La, a 4,600-metre pass between the Hinku and the Dudh Kosi that is a straightforward walk in good weather and a serious undertaking in bad.
Weight is the whole conversation
Mera groups carry rope, hardware, boots and tents. At nearly five thousand metres a single-engine helicopter has very little margin. The realistic figure is three passengers at ten kilos each, and the crew confirms it on the morning based on temperature.
When a group is over, the fix is Kothe. Walking down to 3,600 metres and flying from there gets everyone and everything out in one lift.
Season
Mera has two seasons, roughly April to May and October to November. Outside those months there is very little in the Hinku, the weather picture is thin, and we will want to talk before committing an aircraft.

Khare is the Mera Peak base at 4,950 metres and payload is limited in the same way it is at Lobuche. Where a group is too heavy, staging down to Kothe at 3,600 metres and flying from there is usually the answer.

The airstrip is 527 metres long, slopes uphill at around twelve degrees, and ends in a rock face. Helicopters use the pad adjacent to the apron rather than the runway itself. Stay behind the marked line until the rotor has stopped and approach only from the front, where the crew can see you.

What you need to know before you board
High-altitude departure from open moraine. Three passengers and ten kilos each is the working assumption; the crew will confirm on the morning.
The Hinku is a quieter valley with less traffic and thinner weather information than the Khumbu. We will want a clear picture of your group and your timing.
