Dingboche to Kathmandu helicopter flight 7:30 AM 5 1 hr

An hour in the air from the Imja valley at 4,410 metres to the Kathmandu valley at 1,400. This is the direct exit from the middle of the Everest Base Camp trek, taken by trekkers who are out of days or out of adaptation.

The aircraft comes down the Imja Khola and the Dudh Kosi, takes fuel at Lukla or Phaplu, and crosses the middle hills into Kathmandu. Three thousand metres of descent in a morning.

The altitude argument

If someone in your group has stopped adapting, this is the flight that matters. Descent is the treatment for altitude illness and there is no substitute for it. Going from 4,410 metres to 1,400 in an hour does more than any drug on the market.

If you are simply finished

Then fly to Lukla for a fraction of this price and connect onward the same morning. What you are paying for here is the aircraft committing to the whole transit rather than staying in the valley.

Pilot advisory

A planned fuel stop at Lukla or Phaplu is normal on this leg. The single morning departure is scheduled early for the valley wind at Dingboche and the haze that builds over Kathmandu.

The Dingboche pad is exposed. Secure everything before the aircraft arrives and keep your group together.

If this is a medical departure, contact the dispatch desk directly rather than using the booking form, and walk across to the Pheriche aid post first if the patient can manage it.
